Filenews 26 November 2024 - by Angelos Nicolaou

Of the 13 vehicle delivery complexes, 5 did not respond at all to providing links to the recalls, one pledged to submit them and one has submitted them for some vehicles, a Department of Road Transport (TOM) spokesperson told parliament's Trade Committee.

As of today, the relevant links of the remaining six distributors are provided on the TUM website.  https://www.mcw.gov.cy/mcw/RTD/rtd.nsf/All/94B37A36AD41DE71C2258BE10027F718?OpenDocument

In particular, the official links of manufacturing companies have been posted, which have been submitted to the TFT by the distributors, through which the public will be able to investigate whether there is a recall.

Furthermore, speaking before the Committee, the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, said that meetings were held and a list of all registered vehicles in Cyprus was sent to all vehicle distributors, and they were asked to inform the TFT of any recalls. Submission of data is expected shortly. Subsequently, the public will be informed via SMS, letter and announcements on the TFT website and in the media. The purpose of this action, he said, is to provide valid information to all owners of vehicles imported from third countries about any pending recalls and to ensure their future information from the manufacturing companies.

Appointment of a committee of experts to examine what has not been done since 2010

Following the appointment of an investigating officer for any disciplinary misconduct in the procedure applicable to car recalls following the finding of gaps for defective airbags, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works (YMEE) is proceeding with another investigation.

In statements after the end of the meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Trade, Alexis Vafeades said that the appointment of a committee of experts/lawyers who will examine the legal framework in Cyprus in relation to the European framework and the decisions of the EU Courts is proceeding immediately, in order to inform the Ministry of Commerce of any new regulations that need to be incorporated into Cypriot legislation.

This Commission will investigate the issue of car recalls from 2010, when the regulations of the European directive were adopted, until today.
