FIRE DAMAGE IN DROUSEIA AND INNEIA

 Pafos Live 22 October 2024

Strong ground firefighting forces remained on alert throughout the night in the area of yesterday's fire between the communities of Drouseia and Innia. There were no resurgences and the perimeter of the fire was secured with the use of bulldozers. The devastating fire that broke out early yesterday afternoon from an area of the village of Droushia spread rapidly, encircling critical infrastructure of the National Guard in the neighbouring village of Inenia. Inneia Deputy Mayor Yiangos Tsivikos said very strong winds were blowing in the area that helped the fire spread rapidly despite the timely response of firefighting forces.

The fire, which threatened individual houses in Innia and a photovoltaic park in Droushia, destroyed kiosks and a small clothing warehouse of the camp that was evacuated as a precaution. The deputy mayor of Drouseia, Sotiris Koupparis, complained that the camp was in danger since the necessary cleaning of grass and wild vegetation on the perimeter of the facilities had not been done. If this camp were to take place, he said, it would be in danger.

To extinguish the fire, the Icarus 2 plan was activated, using ten flying means, while strong ground forces of the Department of Forests, the Fire Brigade, the Game Fund and the Civil Defense participated in the extinguishing of the fire. The fire burned a total of 1.3 square kilometers of wild shrub and low vegetation. Late yesterday afternoon, two more fires broke out in areas of the villages of Simou and Agios Dimitrianos that were immediately extinguished.
