ENHANCEMENT OF THE QUALITY OF CYPRUS OLIVE OIL

The Pafos Chamber of Commerce and Industry participates as one of the key partners in the European trans-Mediterranean project Oliveoilmednet. The main objectives of "OliveOilMedNet" are:

To develop methodologies for the identification and certification of varieties, based on their specific organoleptic and chemical characteristics and geographical origin, finally certifying the authenticity of extra virgin olive oils from different olive varieties in the Mediterranean using a machine learning model. To introduce environmentally friendly cultivation techniques, sustainable technological solutions in olive groves and mills and use of socio-economic and environmental assessment tools and methodologies.

To develop an innovative network of stakeholders throughout the olive oil chain to promote sustainable production and consumption practices, as well as to mitigate the effects of climate change on the environment. To strengthen the capacity of national/regional/local authorities involved in policy making in the olive oil sector and the ability of companies to produce more competitive, "authentic" and "green" olive oil products, in collaboration with academic and research institutions.

In the context of this project, today, Friday, October 25, Mr. Panagiotis Katsaris, Agronomist Biotechnologist, Head of Research and Development Projects of ELGO, will be in Cyprus. "DIMITRA" of Kalamata, accompanied by a delegation of the Pafos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will visit the olive mills of Pafos and farms of producers. The purpose of the visit will be to contact olive millers and producers in order to be informed about this program and at the same time to fully understand the importance of proper collection of samples for analysis.

FREE analyses (quality – authenticity of olive oil) will be carried out at the laboratory of ELGO DIMITRA in Kalamata. Upon completion of the analyses, official certificates will be issued by the accredited and internationally recognized laboratory, which producers can use.
