Pafos Live 19 October 2024
The Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation welcomes the response of the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, who, in a letter, informed the Movement that the Deputy Ministry expresses its strong opposition to any intervention that will alter the natural landscape of the "Petra tou Romiou" area. According to the Deputy Minister, apart from the necessary improvement works to facilitate visitor access, the Deputy Ministry does not agree to changes that will degrade the environmental and cultural character of the area.
This letter is a response to the letter sent by the President of the Movement, Mr. George Perdikis, on August 28 to Ms. Kassianidou expressing his concern due to recent statements by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Koumi.
Mr. Perdikis expressed the strong opposition of the Movement to the possibility of creating a tourist beach on the beach of Petra tou Romiou. Mr. Koumis, with his statements, seemed to adopt, the ecologists say in a statement, the idea of developing Petra tou Romiou as a tourist beach, as proposed by local officials of Pafos. Ecologists recall that "Petra tou Romiou" is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas and is part of the Randy State Forest. The area has a special environmental and cultural value and is an integral part of our natural and cultural heritage.
The Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation supports the preservation and protection of the area and expresses its satisfaction with the stance of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. We also call on all relevant bodies, including the Ministries of Transport and Interior, to contribute to the protection of the natural landscape and the aesthetics of the site. Any interventions, they conclude, should be limited to projects that improve access, cleanliness, safety and ensure environmental protection and accessibility for people with disabilities, always with respect to nature and culture of the area.
