CYPRUS LEFT OUT OF EU POLLUTANT FUNDS

 Filenews 24 October 2024

The European Commission announced yesterday that it has chosen to finance, with €4.8 billion, 85 innovative projects that will drastically reduce carbon use and carbon dioxide emissions.

The 85 projects will be financed by the Innovation Fund and EU revenues from greenhouse gas emission allowance trading (auctioning).

The 85 projects to be funded concern 18 EU Member States, of which Cyprus is absent. Specifically, the projects are located in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and Norway.

They cover a wide range of sectors from the following categories: energy-intensive industries, renewable energy, energy storage, industrial carbon management, zero mobility (including maritime and aviation) and buildings.

According to the Commission, the selected projects were assessed by independent experts, based on five award criteria: potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, degree of innovation, operational, financial and technical maturity, replicability and cost-effectiveness.
