It is believed at first sight that a forest fire broke out yesterday in an area of the community of Prodromi, which was brought under full control at 20:30 after burning an area of 2 decares.

According to an announcement by the Department of Forests, the fire broke out in the area of Tsouroulia of the community, at 18:45.

The intervention of the forest fire brigade was immediate, as a result of which the fire was brought under full control at 8:30 p.m. before taking on dimensions, after burning an area of 2 decares, covered with wild low vegetation, it said.

For its extinguishing, 11 people of the Department of Forests worked with 3 fire trucks.

Prima facie, it added, it is estimated that the fire has been set maliciously, although the exact causes of it are being investigated.

Cyprus Police

In the arrest of a 42-year-old person, the Police proceeded, after evaluating information from EUROPOL, that a specific user of an account in an online application, had in his possession and disseminated material of sexual abuse of a child. The suspect was arrested this morning by virtue of a judicial arrest warrant and was then brought before the Limassol District Court, which issued a six-day detention order. The Cybercrime Prosecution Branch is investigating the case.

The Pafos District Court issued a seven-day detention order against a 27-year-old man on Tuesday to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of drug importation and trafficking.

The 27-year-old Syrian, who lives in Paphos with subsidiary protection status, was arrested on Monday afternoon by the Police in an operation of controlled delivery to the Paphos post office of drugs weighing one kilogram and about 100 grams.

According to an announcement by the Communication Branch of the Police Headquarters, specifically, at around 1.45 yesterday, at a post office in Paphos, members of the Anti-Narcotics Service – YKAN proceeded to arrest the 27-year-old, who had just received from the premises a postal parcel containing two packages, with a quantity of cannabis, with a total gross weight of one kilogram and approximately 112 grams. The 27-year-old had presented himself at the premises as the recipient of the parcel.

The parcel with the quantity of drugs was imported into Cyprus last Friday, October 4, on a flight arriving at Larnaka airport from abroad. It was located in cooperation with the Aaches customs authorities, who checked the postal parcel and then, upon detection of the drugs, handed it over to the Police for further investigation of the case.

The case of drug importation and trafficking is being investigated by the District Unit of YKAN in Paphos.

A 40-year-old man was driving in Paralimni with almost five times the amount of alcohol in his blood and was arrested by the police.

According to Steve Theodoulou, spokesperson for the Famagusta Police Department, "members of the Paralimni Police Station stopped a vehicle driven by a 40-year-old man at dawn today. The driver was subjected to an alcohol test with a final reading of 107μg%, instead of 22μg%, which is the legal limit."

The 40-year-old was "arrested for a flagrant offence, and then released to be summoned to court later."

Paralimni Police Station continues the examinations.

A total of five people have been arrested so far by the police, as part of an investigation into a number of cases of burglary and theft committed recently in Nicosia. Three people, two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, are already in custody and two more 17-year-olds were arrested by members of the Nicosia ICF.

Evidence emerged against the three suspects in custody during the investigation of burglary and theft. The Nicosia District Court issued eight days detention orders for police examinations.

Those arrested are allegedly involved in cases of burglaries of supermarkets, fruit shops, cafeteria and souvenir shop, in Lakatameia, Agios Dometios, Laiki Geitonia and Aglantzia.

Money, products, laptops, phone cards, food and tobacco products were stolen.
