The Permanent Assize Court of Famagusta yesterday imposed an 8.5-year prison sentence on a 28-year-old man after finding him guilty following a drug trafficking trial. The case concerned the importation and possession with intent to supply to other persons, of a quantity of cannabis weighing a total of 5 kg and 106 grams.
The quantity of cannabis was detected after a check made by the Customs Authorities in September, 2023, on two postal parcels arriving from abroad, at a post office in Famagusta district. Subsequently, the Police and specifically the Anti-Narcotics Service – YKAN were informed for the purpose of investigating the case.
Laboratory tests showed that the first parcel contained cannabis with a net weight of 3 kg and 156 grams, while the second parcel contained cannabis with a net weight of 1 kg and 950 grams.
On September 05, 2023, a woman aged 19 was presented at the post office as the recipient of the first parcel. After receiving it, he was arrested by members of the YKAN. The 19-year-old had arrived at the post office in a taxi vehicle, in which was also a 24-year-old man, who on the same day, was also arrested by members of the Police, in connection with the drug trafficking case.
Tests carried out by YKAN members revealed evidence against the 28-year-old for importing the two parcels with the quantity of cannabis. He was located and arrested a few days later under a court warrant.
Upon completion of the police examinations, the Police proceeded to the immediate registration of the case for trial by the Famagusta Permanent Assize Court. The trial of the 58-year-old woman from Israel, who was accused of an indecent act that took place on Saturday afternoon (5/10) in the Administration Square in Limassol, during a protest in favour of the Palestinians, has ended.
The Limassol District Court imposed a fine on 3 charges to which the defendant pleaded guilty. The defendant's 24-year-old daughter, who was also at the scene of the incident and was charged, was acquitted of all charges.
The 58-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of indecent act, causing alarm and public insult. The court imposed a total penalty payment of €750 on her.
In his plea for mitigation, the defendant's lawyer, Theodoros Katsikidis, referred to the tense situation in Israel, arguing that his client overreacted at the time. The defense lawyer also stressed that the accused arrived in Cyprus due to the terrorist attacks in Israel, noting that she is a mother of three, with her youngest son aged 19 serving as a soldier and currently fighting in Lebanon.
The defense stressed that due to the war and conditions in Israel, they influenced the 58-year-old's behaviour during the incident. He also touched on the fact that when the two suspects were arrested, a Hebrew interpreter had not been identified in time for them to be interviewed immediately.
Despite the mitigating circumstances, the Court pointed out that, regardless of the circumstances experienced by the defendant, she must abide by the laws of Cyprus.
It is noted that the case acquired a political dimension, as the complaint about the incident was submitted to the Police by AKEL MP, George Koukoumas.
