Preparations for tomorrow's MED9 summit in Paphos are hectic in the presence of the President of the European Commission. The heads of the Mediterranean states of Europe meet on Friday, in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the resort "Minthis" in Tsada.
The Republic of Cyprus is presiding over the MED-9 this year. Apart from Cyprus, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Greece, Croatia and Slovenia participate in Group MED 9. All countries will be represented by their Heads of State or Government except Portugal which will be represented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. King Abdullah of Jordan has been invited and will attend the meeting. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was also invited to the summit, which will deal particularly with the dramatic developments in the region, but he will not be able to participate.
Tomorrow morning, before the start of the summit, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, together with President Christodoulides, will inaugurate at Pafos hospital the modern dialysis unit whose construction was funded by the EU.
According to the schedule that has been announced, the arrivals of foreign leaders at Pafos International Airport will be completed shortly before noon and bilateral meetings will take place immediately after their transfer to Tsada. This will be followed by a working lunch and two joint sessions on EU-Jordan relations and Mediterranean priorities regarding the new institutional cycle. A joint press conference of the Med9 heads of state or government is scheduled at 6 p.m. The meeting will conclude with a social dinner for leaders, spouses and associates.
