Pafos Live 5 September 2024
Major projects in the course of a city or a country need a clear vision, a durable narrative, clear goals and, of course, the will and ability to implement the goals that serve the vision.
This is what the mayor of the city said tonight in his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the new University of Pafos, summarizing the course from the conception of the idea to the realization of the vision. "All this, in order for all these things to coexist, need appropriate leaders, who must also have the gift to inspire all those involved and by extension the whole society in which they operate and lead it to active engagement around the big goals.
Today we are here because the vision of its President to expand the institution to a Mediterranean country and our vision to transform Pafos into a regional centre of higher education of high prestige, at the right time, leaders who were aware of their mission transformed them into a common vision for which they and teams of capable partners have worked painstakingly and effectively over the last 4 years."
The city of Pafos acquires today, he continued, one of the most important projects in its historical course, "which without exaggeration can be ranked among the 15 most important projects of the city in its 2,300 years of history. This project was made just a few hundred meters from world heritage sites of ancient Nea Pafos, such as the Roman headquarters of the city, the famous mosaics and the Hellenistic Theatre.
This project will supply our city with intellectual wealth in the coming years, which will produce material wealth and will put Pafos and Cyprus on the world map of university education. It will be the cause to bring to our city and educate some of the best minds from neighbouring countries and I am sure that some will remain as permanent residents, adding value to our city." He will submit to the President of the University a proposal for the establishment under the auspices of the University, an Institute of International Mediation and Peace. Tonight the light of education and knowledge is growing stronger not only in Pafos but also in the Eastern Mediterranean, he concluded.
