Measures on the Green Line to prevent migrant arrivals are being strengthened, Deputy Migration Minister Nikolas Ioannides said, stressing that his deputy ministry is coordinating with the ministries of defense and justice in this direction.
As a guest on Omega's "Update Now" show, Mr. Ioannides rejected allegations against the Republic of Cyprus for mismanagement of asylum seekers, a finding recorded in a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) that gives a negative sign to Cyprus for the management of asylum seekers.
The report noted that 15 Syrian migrants who tried to leave Lebanon via smuggling boats had suffered human rights violations by Lebanese and/or Cypriot authorities.
The Deputy Minister of Migration said these were allegations and defended the actions of the Republic, which, as he said, are entirely legal. "The RoC safeguards the rights of asylum seekers and as proof of this, it has received praise from the EU for the management of these persons," the deputy minister said.
Mr. Ioannidis has already noted that migrant arrivals are very low and these are now recorded through the green line. By sea, he added, they are extinct.
