The 50-year-old man accused of the murder committed on July 3 in Peyia appeared before the Permanent Assize Court sitting in Paphos on Tuesday. The victim of the murder was his 43-year-old brother-in-law. The proceedings were attended by dozens of relatives dressed in black.
The trial was set for today, but the 50-year-old, who has been in custody all this time, did not respond today to the charges he faces after his lawyer, Neophytos Christou, asked for time to receive further witness material. The representative of the Prosecution, Lawyer of the Republic A' Andreas Hadjikyrou, did not object to the request of the defense lawyer. The Court set the case for October 21, 2024, in order for the 50-year-old to answer the indictment.
The 50-year-old allegedly admitted to committing the crime. He was initially transferred to the Mental Health Hospital in Athalassa, but after his discharge he was rearrested. According to police, the killing began with a simple argument between the 50-year-old and the victim. Subsequent examinations revealed that the victim along with the suspect and other relatives were at a family table at the alleged perpetrator's residence. During dinner, the victim and the suspect argued, confronted and interfered with other bystanders.
The suspect walked away and returned in seconds in possession of a firearm with which he allegedly fatally wounded the victim and then fled the scene. The suspect was arrested in the early hours of July 4, questioned and, according to police, admitted to committing the offences.
