US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher made a post on the purpose of the visit of the US Navy's amphibious operations aircraft carrier USS Wasp to the port of Limassol.
Fisher clarifies that the USS Wasp is visiting Cyprus to support long-term planned activities of cooperation between the two states.
The visit comes at a time when the United States is continuing all efforts with key partners to de-escalate regional tensions and prepare to support civilians in a potential crisis in the region.
As mentioned above, the amphibious operations aircraft carrier of the US Navy USS Wasp, docked at the port of Limassol on Thursday, August 08th.
A US Navy statement said that the Republic of Cyprus is a frequent destination for ships operating in the Mediterranean.
According to the U.S. Navy, the ship arrived for a scheduled visit to port, along with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations (SOC).
The ship and the 24th MEU (SOC) team will conduct exercises and participate in an event with the San Stefano Foundation.
"Our sailors and marines look forward to getting to know the culture of Cyprus, exploring the area, enjoying the local cuisine and volunteering in the community," said Capt. Christopher Purcell, commander of the USS Wasp.
"Port visits like this strengthen our relationships with partner nations and allow us to build on shared values and experiences," he added.
With a length of 258 meters, the USS Wasp can accommodate more than 3,000 people. It has medical facilities capable of providing medical assistance to 600 wounded.
It has been used by the U.S. military to transport marines in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, as well as in humanitarian operations.
The ship's presence has upset residents of Cyprus, some of whom are urging the country to stay away from fighting in the region.
