HEROES SQUARE, LIMASSOL - REDEVELOPMENT STARTS NOVEMBER

Filenews 16 August 2024 - by Ioanna Mantipia

Work is expected to begin in November on the ambitious project concerning the redevelopment of the historic Heroes' Square in Limassol.

The image of Heroes Square changes radically with the main goal of rendering the space to pedestrians and highlighting the importance of the square through the historical, architectural, monumental and social data of the area, which have played an important role until today in the development of the city.

On Monday (5/8) at the Limassol Municipal Hall, the contracts for the construction works were signed between the Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis and on behalf of the construction company An. Christou Constructions, its Director, Christos Christou.

The project is implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme THALEIA 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Union and its implementation will last 18 months, with a total budget of €3.9 million plus VAT. The project was preceded by an architectural competition and the project entitled "Square of Everyday Heroes" was selected by AA&U-Socrates Stratis and INB2in studio-Maria Chatzisotiriou, while the supervision was undertaken by INB2in studio Maria Chatzisotiriou.

According to the designers, the works will be carried out in such a way as to affect as little as possible the tenants and owners of the café restaurants of the square. The proposal, entitled "Square of Everyday Heroes", shapes the space of the square based on a "smart" floor that will function as an infrastructure grid for social and ecological processes. The floor will consist of perforated surfaces, for collecting rainwater and transporting it to underground tanks through linear channels that run through the surface of the square.

The new configuration of the floor will allow seamless movement throughout the square, without steps, while it will be connected to its perimeter streets that will be pedestrianized for some hours of the day. Specific structures such as "Little Rialto", "Greenhouse of Ideas for All", "Toy Library" and "Hanging Gardens" are also proposed.
