EAC WILL INSTALL AN ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM WITH A CAPACITY OF 160 MWh

Filenews 13 August 2024 - by Angelos Nicolaou

EAC is proceeding with the installation of a large energy storage system. It will have a capacity of 160 MWh, will be installed at the site of the Dhekelia power plant and is expected to cost around €62 million.

The operation of the energy storage system will mitigate the problems arising from the increased penetration of RES. It is estimated that only for 2024 there will be a cut in energy production from large photovoltaic installations by 20-25%.

EAC has submitted a relevant application to CERA, which is being evaluated, while two more EAC applications with a capacity of 80 MWh are pending in the areas of Geri and Kalo Chorio.

EAC has submitted an information report to the Department of Environment for the project in the Dhekelia area, which administratively belongs to the Ormidia community of Larnaka District. EAC, if it secures the permits by the end of the year, plans to start the project next January and complete it within 10 months.
