WARMEST JUNE OF ALL TIME

 Pafos Live 13 July 2024

Particularly extreme high are the temperatures recorded in Cyprus this June, both daily maximum and daily minimum and average daily temperatures, so much so that they classify this June as the warmest June ever recorded on the island, since climatic data are available on the island.

According to the July Agrometeorological Bulletin, issued by the Department of Meteorology, for fifteen of the thirty days of June, the Department of Meteorology had issued a yellow or orange warning for extremely high temperatures. In addition, for one day in mid-June there was a red warning for extreme high temperatures, while for another two days in June, there was a yellow warning for thunderstorms. The month is also characterized as very dry, due to the very low rainfall that occurred.

Specifically, for days 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28 June, a warning was issued at the yellow risk level for extreme high temperature (either maximum, minimum, or a combination of both), while on the 5th, 7th and 13th of June a warning was issued at the orange risk level for extreme high temperature. On the 14th, a warning was issued in the red risk level for extreme high temperature. On the 9th and 22nd of June, a warning was issued in the yellow storm danger level.

Preliminary meteorological data for June

—————-

From the initial data, as recorded by the Department of Meteorology, it appears that June recorded rainfall heights with an average surface distribution of 29% or 1.9 mm compared to normal which is 6.6 mm, which classifies it as a very dry month compared to its normal value.

During June, on the 8th, 9th, 22nd and 30th of the month local rains and thunderstorms were recorded, while hail was recorded on the 8th and 9th of the month.

In relation to the recorded average daily maximum temperature, this was far from normal. Extreme maximum temperatures with positive deviations well beyond 4 degrees Celsius were also recorded, such as at Achna station and Larnaka airport, with extreme maximum daily temperatures of 42.9°C and 41.2°C, respectively, which were 12°C and 11.3°C above the normal maximum temperature of each station, respectively.

It is also important that at the mountain station of Prodromos (at an altitude of 1,368 m) the highest daily maximum temperature recorded (35.6 °C) was 10.6 °C above the normal of the month. Extreme minimum temperatures with positive deviations were also recorded, such as at Achna station where its minimum temperature (29.2°C) was 10.3°C above normal (18.9°C) and at Prodromos where its minimum temperature (25°C) was 10°C above normal (15°C).

The average relative humidity in the morning was between 30-67%.

Climatological data and seasonal forecast for July

—————

According to the Department of Meteorology, July, like the next month, August, is characterized by episodes with thunderstorm activity in the afternoon hours in the interior and mountains, mainly due to thermal instability of the subsurface layers of the atmosphere. The advent of baroclinic systems in the area of Cyprus is very rare. During this period (July – August) the highest maximum temperatures are recorded.

July, in Cyprus, temperature is expected to be normal. In relation to the expected amount of rain, it is expected to be less than 75% in the southwestern part of the island while in the northeastern part of the island it is expected to be up to 200% of normal.
