Top 10 Tips to Keep You Cool During a Heat Wave
1. Find air conditioning.
If you don't have air conditioning in your home, stay cool by visiting your local library, community center, movie theater, or a shopping mall.
2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids — even if you don't feel thirsty.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol. One quart of water per hour is recommended if working in heat.
3. Stay indoors.
If you must be outside, find shade and take frequent breaks.
4. Avoid strenuous or high-energy activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.
5. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-coloured clothing.
6. Watch for signs of heat illness, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical attention.
7. Never leave a child or pet alone in an enclosed vehicle.
Always double-check the back seat and make sure your children aren’t still in the car before leaving.
8. Check on the well-being of family, friends and neighbours, especially those who don’t have air conditioning.
9. Check on pets frequently to ensure they aren’t suffering from the heat.
10. Prepare for a possible power outage.
Re-stock your family’s emergency supply kit. If a member of your household depends on life support or needs other medical equipment, have an emergency plan in place, including a backup power supply.
