PAPHOS - THE NEW MAP OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT FROM TODAY

Filenews 1 July 2024 - by Dora Christodoulou

Four municipalities and eight community complexes officially operate as of today in the district of Pafos, as well as the new District Organization of Self-Government.

The Municipality of Pafos is the only municipal authority in the district that has not been substantially differentiated in terms of spatial planning, since no new community has joined it. However, significant differentiation is recorded at the level of the City Council, since the number of municipal councillors has increased to 23 due to its population growth. As it is known, Phedon Phedonos has been re-elected Mayor while Angelos Onisiforou, president of the recreation centers of the province, was elected Deputy Mayor.

In the neighboring Municipality of Geroskipou, on the contrary, the provisions of the new map of Local Government are more than noticeable. Now, the new authority is the Municipality of East Pafos, in which, apart from Geroskipou, four communities of low eastern Pafos have joined: Timi, Acheleia, Agia Marinouda, Konia. Nikos Palios has been elected mayor, there are five deputy mayors, as well as 11 municipal councillors.

At the western end of the province, the Municipality of Pegeia is replaced by the Municipality of Akamas, focusing on Pegeia and including six communities: Akoursos, Ineia, Kathikas, Kato Arodes, Pano Arodes and Kissonerga. Marinos Lambrou was re-elected mayor and will be flanked by seven deputy mayors and nine municipal councillors.

13 communities joined the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous: Agia Marina, Androlikou, Argaka, Gialia, Drousia, Kritou Terra, Makounta, Neo Chorio, Nea Dimmata, Pelathousa, Pomos, Terra and Chrysochou. Yiotis Papachristofi was re-elected mayor and there will also be 14 deputy mayors and two municipal councillors.

Eight community clusters operate in the Pafos district as of today. The largest in population but smallest in number of communities is the 8th cluster in which Chloraka, Emba and Lemba participate, hosting 15% of the population of the province.

In the 2nd and 7th clusters participate 18 communities, in the 4th cluster ten, in the 1st eight communities and from seven communities in the other three clusters.

In the Pafos EDA, the first president in the history of the new institution was elected Charalambos Pittokopitis, who will be flanked by a 16-member council.
