MASOUD PEZESHKIAN IS IRAN'S NEW PRESIDENT

 in-cyprus 7 July 2024

Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s newly elected president, a moderate and reformist figure, carries the hopes of millions of Iranians seeking fewer restrictions on social freedoms and a more pragmatic foreign policy.

Pezeshkian, who defeated hardliner Saeed Jalili in the second round of the presidential elections yesterday, has promised to adopt a realistic approach in foreign affairs.

This victory may be welcomed by global powers hoping he will work towards peacefully easing tensions between Iran and the West regarding Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear programme.

Pezeshkian managed to secure his win by attracting an electorate composed largely of urban middle-class and young voters. These groups have long been disillusioned with the imposition of harsh measures to suppress deviations from strict Islamic norms.

Policy promises

The 69-year-old cardiothoracic surgeon has pledged to pursue a realistic foreign policy, ease tensions in the stalled negotiations with major powers over reviving the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, and improve prospects for social liberalisation and political pluralism in Iranian society.

With promises to revive the nuclear deal and improve internal freedoms, Pezeshkian’s administration might mark a significant shift in Iran’s political landscape, potentially leading to better relations with the international community and more open society within the country.
