CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 12 July 2024

The perpetrators of the criminal act against the offices of a Forex company in Limassol were "hit" with assailants wearing helmets and riding a scooter-type motorcycle.

According to police, examinations revealed that the two perpetrators were wearing helmets and were riding a black scooter-type motorcycle, which did not bear registration numbers.

Specifically, the passenger disembarked and fired a number of shots with a pistol at the offices. He then got on the motorcycle and the two attackers fled the scene.  Subsequent examinations found that the glass case and wall of the offices were hit with about 5 to 6 shots.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     It is recalled that around the building there was a security guard who by pure luck was not injured, since at that time he was in another place.  It is noted that various closed circuits in the area are expected to be received for study, in order to identify the perpetrators.  The scene remains under guard.

Police in Paphos arrested a 29-year-old man to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of impersonation and illegal stay in the territory of the Republic.

According to Paphos Assistant Police Director of Operations, Michalis Nicolaou, at around 10 last night, a member of the Paphos Aliens and Immigration Service intercepted a person on Kaniggos Street in Paphos for checking. That person did not have any evidence to prove his identity, but gave some evidence to the police officer.

There are neither criminal nor disciplinary responsibilities of police officers for the death of 19-year-old Anisur Rahman from Bagaldesh, who tragically lost his life when last April he fell from the balcony of the 5th floor of an apartment he lived in in an apartment building in Limassol, apparently to avoid  a police control.

This seems to record the report of the two criminal investigators handed over to the Independent Authority for the Investigation of Allegations and Complaints against the Police (AADIPA). The two criminal investigators were appointed to examine whether there was any responsibility on the part of the police officers who had rushed to the apartment building for a check, following information that illegal aliens were living in an apartment.

After the tragic incident, allegations were made that police officers of the Aliens and Immigration Service broke down the door and even beat two residents. All this was not verified by the foreigners themselves during the investigation carried out.

The tragic events unfolded on April 10, 2024 when, at 6.20, following information that irregular migrants were living in a specific apartment on the 5th floor of an apartment building in the center of Limassol, members of the Police went for a relevant check. Before entering the apartment, two foreigners who seem to have been scared and in their attempt to escape, one jumped from a bedroom window causing him to fall on the balcony of another apartment and was fatally injured and the other jumped from the balcony of the apartment and landed on a balcony of another apartment resulting in serious injuries. A total of 11 people from Bangladesh lived in the apartment and all were in Cyprus without the necessary residence permits.

According to "F" information, the injured man in his statement allegedly said that he suddenly heard a roommate shouting at him "run, the police are coming" so he jumped from the balcony.

More than 30 statements were taken in the case and no one said that the police did anything wrong. In fact, the police said that they had consent to conduct a search and that in such cases a search warrant was not needed, as they would conduct a search of persons and not of the premises.

The report will be studied by the Authority (perhaps by its chairman) and if gaps or omissions are found, criminal investigators will be asked to fill them. Also, according to "F's" information, the forensic reports on the cause of death of the 19-year-old are not yet ready, so they will be expected before the conclusion along with the comments of the Authority, forwarded to the Attorney General for study and any instructions.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou, stated today before the Permanent Assize Court of Famagusta, non-admission to offences involving forgery, circulation of a false document, extortion of money by false representations, false reports of company officials and money laundering.

According to police sources, during today's proceedings, Mr. Zannettou replied "non-admission" to the charges brought against him by the representative of the Prosecution and the Assize Court set the next hearing for continuation of the hearing, October 30.

Until then, the Mayor of Ayia Napa will be free, after a guarantee of 100 thousand euros was signed with a creditworthy guarantor.

It is noted that Christos Zanettou is a defendant in a case of securing €765,000 from European funds 12 years ago, related to the upgrade of a hotel of which, at the time in question, he was a director and shareholder.

It is recalled that the Minister of Interior, in an announcement on July 2, "based on the opinion of the Legal Service, decided not to suspend the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou".

The Ministry's announcement states that "this decision was taken taking into account that the commencement and completion of the investigation of the offences under investigation and/or the registration of the criminal case against the person in question, took place before the entry into force of the provisions of article 113 of the Municipalities Law of 2022 [Law 52 (I)/2022]".

It is also noted that "taking into account the fact that the Law in force until June 30, 2024 on Municipalities (Law 111/1985) did not contain similar provisions to article 113 of the Municipalities Law of 2022 for a holiday of elected members of the Municipal Council, Mr. Zannettou could not be suspended."
