The target of criminal elements became a business premises in Episkopi, in which an explosive device exploded.

According to police, the explosive device exploded shortly after one in the morning, causing slight damage to the entrance of a fast food restaurant, owned by a 24-year-old, which was to operate in the near future.

It was determined that the explosion was due to the detonation of an improvised explosive device with a charge of low-power explosive.

In the context of consolidating the sense of security among citizens, preventing and suppressing crime and traffic offences, members of the Limassol Police Authority carried out targeted checks this weekend as well.

According to the Limassol Police Authority, 506 vehicles and 588 persons were checked, while 76 breathalyzer tests were carried out, from which it was found that 21 people were driving under the influence of alcohol. There were also 64 complaints about other road traffic offences, 41 cases against drivers and 14 cars and three motorcycles were seized. The inspections also revealed complaints from 10 establishments about operating without a license, without a music license and without a liquor license.

As part of the checks, members of the Police proceeded to the arrest of a 24-year-old wanted man for conspiracy to commit a felony and arson, the arrest of a 45-year-old prohibited immigrant [see below], the arrest of three persons for two cases of illegal possession of duty-free tobacco products, as well as four arrests for illegal stay in the territory of the Republic.

Police arrested in Limassol a 45-year-old man who had been deported in 2016 after being convicted in a murder and robbery case.

According to the Limassol Police Authoritythe 45-year-old was arrested on the basis of information that this person, who was a prohibited immigrant and was on the stop-list, returned to Cyprus to visit a relative, who was being treated in a private clinic.

Specifically, last Saturday, members of OPE Limassol placed the hospital under discreet surveillance, when they noticed a vehicle driven by a person who looked like the 45-year-old.   After signalling to the driver, he stopped and the check revealed that it was the specific person.

He was arrested for the offenses of illegal entry and stay in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and was detained.

They replied that they did not plead guilty to the grave charges they face for the arsenal found in a grave in Oroklini on May 20 by the two defendants. The 46-year-old and the 35-year-old appeared on Monday morning before the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court, where they were charged with serious charges.

They were charged with 16 counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, 5 counts of possession and transportation of firearms, one count of possession and transportation of firearm ammunition, 7 counts of possession of explosives without a license and one count of unlawful possession and transportation of a silencer. The 16th charge is possession of explosives without a license and only the 46-year-old was charged. After they said they did not admit, the case was set for hearing on September 24, 2024. The two accused were ordered to remain in custody.

It is recalled that a few days ago, a 42-year-old suspect was arrested for the murder of Thanasis Kalogeropoulos, committed in October 2023 in Limassol. Genetic material of the suspect, according to police, had been found on the weapon. A separate case is expected to be registered for the 42-year-old at a later stage.

It is noted that the 46-year-old defendant was arrested at the cemetery of Oroklini, as he was carrying a bag in which were found, among other things, a shotgun, 500 bullets in 10 packages of 50 and a pistol. Also found in the tomb were military weapons, such as an anti-tank launcher with three propellant projectiles, a number of rounds of ammunition, improvised explosive devices, one of which was connected to a mobile phone and ready for use, as well as a pistol with a silencer.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Ayia Napa for facilitating police investigations into an ongoing case of public insult, threat, alarm, disturbing the peace, assaulting a police officer and resisting lawful arrest.

According to Steve Theodoulou, spokesman of the Famagusta Police Headquarters, "members of the Mechanized Immediate Action Unit arrested, in the morning hours today in Ayia Napa, a 31-year-old man. The members of the Unit, during their patrol, had received information that a man causes concern and nuisance and with his behaviour annoys patrons of premises in Ayia Napa".

He added that "the members of the MMAD visited the premises where, at the sight of the police, the 31-year-old began to insult and threaten them, resulting in his arrest for the offences of public insult, threat, alarm and disturbing the peace. The man then pushed members of the force and resisted in order to evade arrest, as a result of which he was also arrested for the offences of assaulting a police officer and resisting lawful arrest."

According to Theodoulou, "the 31-year-old was transferred and detained in police detention cells and then, after being charged in writing with the offences he committed, he was released to be summoned before a court at a later stage."

The arrest of a 30-year-old man from Bulgaria, a permanent resident of Paralimni, was carried out yesterday by members of the Famagusta Police Authority, regarding investigated offences of night burglary of a residence and theft, illegal possession of property and theft from a car.

Specifically, on 30/06/2024, a Russian national, a permanent resident of Limassol, reported that during the morning hours between the dates 29 – 30 June 2024, his room in a hotel unit in Ayia Napa was burglarized and from there electronic devices and various personal items were stolen, with a total value of  €1600.

Yesterday 30/06/2024 at about 1200 o'clock the complainant received a notification on his mobile phone that one of the stolen devices and specifically a pair of airpods transmitted a signal from a beach in Ayia Napa. Members of the Ayia Napa Police Station went to the area and tests carried out located the 30-year-old.

A subsequent search found a shoulder bag carrying the airpods in question, as well as other property for which he was unable to give satisfactory explanations as to the legality of his possession and he was arrested for the offence of unlawful possession of property.

Under questioning, the 30-year-old admitted to committing the above burglary and was subsequently re-arrested under a court arrest warrant and remained in custody.

Today 01/07/2024 the 30-year-old arrested man appeared before the Famagusta District Court where a detention order was issued against him for a period of four (4) days. The ICF of Famagusta continues the examinations.
