SECURITY ON THE BEACH

 Pafos Live 21 June 2024

During this period when the beaches are full of people seeking relaxation and pleasure, thefts on the beach are a frequent occurrence.

As has been observed, when bathers enter the sea and their personal belongings remain unattended, they are an invitation to a thief.

Therefore, the Police draw the public's attention to take precautionary measures to safeguard their property during their stay on the beach.

The public is encouraged to:

-Carry only the necessary amount of money to the beach and avoid carrying valuable items such as jewellery, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc.

-In case such items are transported, they should not be left unattended, while where possible, the bather can cooperate with other bathers for the mutual surveillance of their property.

-Bags in which such items are carried should not be left open, because they may attract attention and invitation. They must be closed so that their contents are not visible.

-Also, it is preferable that many valuable items (eg mobile phone, wallet) are kept safely in the car and not in a prominent position, while the car is locked and parked, where possible, in a secured area. Also, when there is an alarm which has been set.

-When there is no other person we trust, the bag with our personal belongings is better fixed and locked on a fixed object on the beach, such as a sunbed or beach umbrella.

-When you are a large company, it is good that not everyone enters the sea at the same time and in turn someone watches over the personal belongings of the group.

-When you do not have a bag with you and only carry your car key and mobile phone, do not leave them exposed and in plain sight. They should be placed in a bag or covered e.g. by a beach towel.

-Be constantly in the care of your personal belongings when swimming, sunbathing or playing on the beach.

In general, the public is urged, if necessary, to immediately inform the Police or contact the Citizen's Communication Line at 1460.
