PAPHOS FIRE - DAMAGE OF SEVERAL MILLION EUROS

 Pafos Live 17 June 2024

The economic disaster caused by last Tuesday's fire in the villages of Polemi-Psathi-Agios Dimitrianos-Choulou and Lemona is enormous. Officers of the Pafos district administration and the district agriculture office completed last night their preliminary investigations and recordings on the loss of houses and other premises as well as plantations. At the same time, the ecological damage is immeasurable.

Four houses were completely destroyed while another 15 houses and premises suffered extensive damage.

As far as agricultural holdings are concerned, it is estimated that 2,500 tons of cereals, 500 tons of olives, copious quantities of vines, about 60 tons of deciduous, mainly almond, carob and hay bales have been burned. Five livestock farms were also extensively damaged, while 300 rabbits and 30 sheep were lost on farms. The destruction of irrigation systems is also huge, since the inhabitants of these villages were forced to transport water for their crops over long distances. It is estimated that close to half a million euros will be needed just to replace the plastic pipes that have been burned.

It is noted that the instructions given on Saturday by the president of the republic during his tour of the region were that by the time of the cabinet meeting, the day after tomorrow, a proposal for compensation for those affected had been prepared.
