HUGE DESTRUCTION - SATELLITE IMAGE

At 15.94 square kilometers, the first estimate of the burnt area in the Pafos district, according to satellite data from the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence of CUT and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The research team, consisting of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence of the Cyprus University of Technology and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing – National Forest Fire Observatory), presents the first assessment of the burnt area in the Pafos district, using high-resolution PlanetScope satellite data with a spatial resolution of 3m.

The fire broke out on Tuesday, June 11 and was estimated with an image taken on June 12 at 10:51 and amounting to 15.94 square kilometers. It should be noted that the affected area includes unburned vegetation islands, but the area, excluding these areas, amounts to 13.55 square kilometers.

The areas of Psathi, Milia, Polemi, Choulou, Kourdaka, Agios Dimitrianos and Lemonas have been affected by the fire. In the coming days, a more detailed mapping of the burnt area will be carried out, if additional satellite data are available.
