The investigations of the ICF of Limassol are moving rapidly to identify the arsonists who caused the big fire last Friday afternoon in the area of Agios Silas. At the same time, they do not exclude the possibility that the perpetrators are the same ones who set fire to Agios Therapontas in the evening of the same day.

Investigators, in an effort to find more evidence and get to the whereabouts of arsonists, are looking for CCTV from the wider area, while constantly receiving new testimonies from victims and residents of the area.

In the hands of the investigation team is information that two people were riding in a double-cab vehicle and threw lit pieces of solid oil out of the window. This is a testimony that was given to the ICF of Limassol, but the person who gave it told the investigators that this information came to his knowledge from another citizen. Things are complicated here as for the moment the citizen who noticed the two persons and reported it to others has not been identified.

Speaking to "F", the head of the ICF of Limassol, Lefteris Kyriakou, confirmed that this is information, appealing to the public and the specific citizen to go to the Police and give more information about what came to his attention.

Under the microscope of the investigations have also been placed persons who previously concerned the authorities with cases of arson and lighting fires in the countryside. For the time being, nothing reprehensible has emerged, while a person who was convicted a few years ago for a fire in the same area, as reported by "F", continues to serve a prison sentence.

However, it cannot go unnoticed that both fires that broke out in the area of Agios Silas in Limassol, on May 9 and May 31, have many things in common. Specifically, both fires were set in the same area, the second at a distance of 500 meters from the point of the first. They occurred around noon, while on these days strong winds were blowing in Limassol. All this shows that the arsonists acted deliberately, having knowledge of the weather conditions and that these are inaccessible areas.

At the same time, it is worrying that while the Fire Brigade was aware that the fire that threatened the industrial area on May 9, was set maliciously, it appears that additional measures were not taken in the area to prevent yesterday's fire.

Over €200,000 the damage

The owner of the firewood factory, Iakovos Koumis, told "F", who saw his fortune and the efforts of a lifetime reduced to ashes and burned. He blasted the actions of the Fire Department, claiming that he did not drop a drop of water on his business even before the fire spread. "Three fire engines came and went straight to protect a house. The fire was outside my business and instead of putting it out when it was at the beginning, they let it move on to the second block."

He claimed, among other things, that thanks to the help of volunteer groups he saved the generator of his business. The damage to the premises amounts to €200,000, with the owner reporting that expensive machinery equipment was burned. Next to Mr. Koumi's homestead, a business with wooden pallets was burned. The fire damaged prefabricated premises, a livestock farm, while dozens of animals were burned alive. At the same time, crops, trees and wild vegetation were destroyed. Crews of the Limassol District Administration are expected to go to the affected area to record the damage, while about 5 square kilometers were reduced to ashes.
