With a prison sentence of two years, another shocking case that has been going through closed proceedings before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol for some months was closed.

The case was brought to light by the newspaper "F", with the accused mother of the little boy, kidnapping him along with two close relatives and fleeing through occupied areas to Turkey. The abduction of the then 5-year-old took place in 2021 and since then, it took two whole years and a never-ending struggle with various state and international agencies involved, so that the child could return to the hands of his father and guardian. The mother was arrested last September and faced Cypriot justice.

As philenews is aware, due to the serious offences, the proceedings were referred for trial before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol with the accused mother in closed proceedings admitting charges of abduction of a minor, disobeying court orders and endangering a child. The multi-page indictment includes more than 100 charges and the Assize Court imposed the longest sentence, that of two years, on the offense of abduction of a minor and smaller sentences on the other charges.

It is noted that the accused mother was under trial in the Central Prison all this time until the conclusion of the trial.

The abduction of the minor shortly before the custody decision

The abduction of the then 5-year-old child took place shortly before the end of the legal battle his parents had before the Limassol Family Court for his custody. Specifically, the father had denounced on September 30, 2021, that his former cohabitant kidnapped the child and left Cyprus through occupied areas. The sad thing about the case is the fact that 2 months after the abduction and specifically on November 12, 2021, the father was entrusted with the entire parental responsibility of the little one.

As "F" had previously written, on September 27, 2021, the mother and her relatives crossed the occupied areas and from there they went to Turkey. These persons then tried to flee with false documents to Canada, however, they were arrested in Istanbul on November 11, 2021. The minor from then until the end of September 2023 lived with his mother, in an unknown place in an area of Turkey, while demarches and efforts were made by many involved state services.

In 2022, the Limassol District Court convicted the grandmother and aunt (relatives of the accused) for the offences of conspiracy to commit a felony and kidnapping by a person exercising joint guardianship. In closed-door proceedings, the Court sentenced the two women to 18 months in prison. The arrest of the above two persons took place in Athens in February 2022, based on a European arrest warrant pending against them.

Since then, the mother has been living with her minor child in Turkey and after various representations, she was persuaded to travel around the end of September 2023 with the minor boy, from Turkey to Athens. Then, members of the Greek police handcuffed her as a European arrest warrant was pending against her. The mother remained for a few weeks under arrest in Greece and finally on October 9, 2023 she was handed over to the investigators of the ICF Limassol.
