 Filenews 12 June 2024

The Assize Court in Paphos yesterday sentenced a 27-year-old man to 12 years in prison after finding him guilty in connection with a case involving illegal importation and possession of drugs.

It is recalled that a large quantity of cannabis was detected and confiscated at Pafos airport on January 31, following an information assessment by YKAN in cooperation with the Customs Authorities.

Specifically, around 10 in the morning, two persons aged 28 and 20, who had arrived at Pafos airport from abroad, were stopped for checking. A subsequent search of their luggage found and seized 28 nylon packages, containing a total quantity of cannabis with a gross weight of 33 kg and 297 grams.

A decree banning the driving of any motor vehicle was issued today by the Famagusta district court in Paralimni against a 41-year-old Bulgarian resident of Paralimni, who was found on two different dates between April and June driving under the influence of alcohol after previously being involved in road traffic collisions.

Specifically, on 11/6/24 at about 22:15 on Kapparis Avenue in Paralimni, the 41-year-old, while driving his motor vehicle, lost control, as a result of which he deviated from his course and collided with a parked vehicle.

The scene was visited by members of the Paralimni Police Station, who subjected the 41-year-old to a preliminary alcohol test with a reading of 145mg instead of 22mg and then at the Paralimni police station he underwent a final alcohol test with a reading of 148mg instead of 22mg.

It should be noted that the 41-year-old was again involved in a road traffic collision on 15/4/24 in Paralimni where he was found driving under the influence of alcohol with a reading of 119mg instead of 22mg.

The 41-year-old appeared today before the Famagusta District Court for both cases where the Court designated the case for response to the charges on 2/7/24 and issued a decree prohibiting the 41-year-old from driving any motor vehicle until the case is heard.

The 41-year-old signed a €5,000 bail to ensure his presence in court. It is noted that the 41-year-old on November 4, 2021 was sentenced by the Famagusta District Court for a case involving the same offense of driving under the influence of alcohol to a penalty of deprivation of his driver's license for a period of 30 days from 4/11/21-4/12/21 and to a sentence of 45 days imprisonment with a three-year suspension, which expires on 4/11/24.

Paralimni Police Station is investigating both cases
