Green Line

The Green Line was first created on December 30, 1963, when the first intercommunal riots broke out. It was called the Green Line because the then commander of the British forces in Cyprus, who were called to be the neutral overseers of the truce, Major General Peter Young, drew it with green pencil on the map of Nicosia. At first the Green Line concerned only Nicosia, later, after 1974, as a Ceasefire Line or as a Buffer Zone, it runs from east to west for a length of 300 km. the whole of Cyprus, separating the northern, occupied by Turkish troops part where a "state" recognized only by Turkey was created by the Turkish Cypriots, from the southern free part of the Republic of Cyprus.
