CAR SECURITY - Cyprus Police

CAR SECURITY - Cyprus Police 7/6/24

Incidents of car theft are observed at regular intervals, often due to the unsafe storage of the vehicle or its keys. In light of recent incidents of car theft, where in some cases drivers have left their vehicle unlocked and the keys in the ignition, the Police are listing some simple safety measures that car owners and drivers can take to prevent possible car theft their vehicle. - We don't leave our car running and never leave the keys in the ignition or in the car. Even if we are going to be away even for a very short time for a visit to a store, office or other place, we lock our car and have the keys in our possession - We always lock the doors and roll up the windows all the way, even if our car is parked in front of our house or somewhere else we consider safe - Inside our car we should not leave valuable items exposed and in a prominent position, such as bags, wallets, briefcases, mobile phones, laptops or other items that may attract the attention of vigilantes and prompt their theft -We do not leave our car keys exposed in prominent places or in places that can be accessed by any third party in our home, workplace or any other place we visit -We take care to keep our car keys safe, especially when we are in crowded places such as shops, restaurants, etc., where there is an increased chance of them being stolen -We always park our car in places where there is enough street lighting and preferably in supervised car parks. Dark or secluded places make it easier for thieves - Finally, it is recommended to install an anti-theft alarm system in our car

More generally, the public is urged to be alert and cooperate closely with the Police and in case they spot anything suspicious, such as persons or vehicles moving suspiciously, or know anything about such incidents of theft, to immediately inform the local Police Station or to contact the Citizen's Hotline on 1460 since this can contribute to the identification of suspicious persons, to the investigation of incidents of theft and to the prevention of such incidents in the future.
