AT 147 METERS, THE 'LONDON EYE' OF CYPRUS - COST OF €50million, WITH 36 CABINS

Filenews 18 June 2024- by  Angelos Nicolaou

Strategically located in the heart of Limassol on the historic site of the old Port, Hyperion will be located at an altitude of approximately 147 meters above sea level. This is the construction and operation of a mixed development consisting of a 36-cabin spinning wheel and recreational areas, named "Hyperion Limassol".

The project will be similar to London's London Eye and each cabin will accommodate 6-12 people. It will be constructed on land that will be created by embankment, on the south side of the breakwater of the Old Port of Limassol, within the administrative boundaries of the Limassol Municipality. The project also includes an electronic aquarium.

An environmental study has been submitted for the proposed project and is open for consultation until 12/7/2024.

The purpose of the proposed project is the creation of new recreation and entertainment areas but also to
cover part of the working needs of the Limassol Municipality area. It is expected that the operation of the project will create new jobs and further strengthen the area, enhancing the socio-economic character of the area.

The project is estimated at €50 million and bears the stamp of Ukrainian businessman Dmytro Lepkov.

The preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Study is considered necessary for the licensing of the project, in order to determine the degree of impact of the environmental parameters from its construction and operation, as well as to find the necessary measures to eliminate the negative effects that the project may bring.

The construction site of the project will be created with the appropriate backfilling with natural rocky materials in a specific sea area in the area of the Old Port of Limassol. The competent authority for the project is the Cyprus Ports Authority, which also owns the site.

Specifically, the land area that will be created by backfilling, abuts the south side of the breakwater of the Old Port of Limassol. Nearby there are several developments since it is a busy, up-and-coming area of Limassol Municipality. It is located about 200 meters east of Limassol Marina which hosts various restaurants, bars, cafes etc. It is also located about 400 meters southeast of Limassol Castle, at a distance of about 200 meters north of the proposed project, is the Limassol Molos.

The main public access to the project area will be from the eastern breakwater of the Old Port of Limassol, which is connected through the land areas of the Port with the coastal road of Spyrou Araouzos. The rest of the public infrastructure (electricity network, sewage drainage, drinking water supply) necessary for the operation of the project is available in the area of the Old Port of Limassol. With the appropriate extensions of the existing public infrastructure, it is possible to connect the project to the national electricity network, the water supply system and the central sewerage system.

For the needs of the project, a breakwater will be constructed that will protect the backfill from erosion due to the presence of waves. Preliminarily, it is estimated that the quantity of materials to be used amounts to 10,000 cubic meters, while these materials will come from licensed quarries of Parekklisia or Polemidia. For the backfilling, split graded rocky materials of the land area that will be created on the south side of the breakwater are required. These materials will have a maximum weight of 500 kg and their quantity is estimated at 50,000 cubic meters.
