ADVICE FOR COPING WITH THE HEATWAVE

 Filenews 14 June 2024

The Pancyprian Pharmaceutical Association makes recommendations to the public to deal with the heatwave.

In an announcement, the Pancyprian Pharmaceutical Association states that this intense weather phenomenon, which occurs mainly during the summer months, can make life and everyday life unbearable as well as create serious health problems, if we do not take some measures for our protection.

According to the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association, the heat wave is treated with simple steps such as avoiding sunbathing and staying in shady and cool places, away from crowded places mainly at noon.

It also notes that heavy physical work or sports should be avoided in areas without proper air conditioning and ventilation.

At the same time, it gives a strict recommendation against walking for long distances and periods of time or rolling under the sun at noon, since such conditions require a protective hat with good ventilation of the head and light, comfortable and light-coloured clothing, made of non-synthetic materials, for proper ventilation of the body and evaporation of sweat.

A prerequisite, he adds, are light and small meals, fruits and vegetables, but not fat.

Under heatwave conditions, she also recommends hydrating and drinking plenty of sugar-free or sugar-free drinks where possible. Add a little or more salt to your food if you sweat heavily and avoid alcoholic beverages.

He says lukewarm showers during the day and wet covers on the head and neck help the body better control its temperature.

If you or members of your family suffer from chronic diseases (respiratory, cardiovascular, etc.), consult your attending physician for the application of special instructions and any adjustment with medications taken during the heat wave.

According to the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association, light clothes should be chosen for infants and children and the public is careful not to stay in the sun after swimming in the sea and always wear a light hat. Always after consultation with the paediatrician we supplement their diet with fluids where possible.

As far as elderly people are concerned, he says that it is imperative to stay in areas with air conditioning without intense age exposure.

Supplements that help cope with heat waves are electrolytes found in body fluids and tissues. "We must always maintain their balance in our body in order to regulate the levels of fluids in the body and the proper functioning of the body's systems," he adds.

At the same time, he says that vitamin C, ascorbic acid, helps support sweat glands and prevent burnout of the body at higher temperatures. Vitamin C, due to its antioxidant action, like vitamin E, protects the skin from the harmful radiation of the sun.

Finally, it urges the public to ask its pharmacist to direct it so that it can obtain the appropriate dietary supplements, proper sunscreens with a high protective index from the pharmacy, for the best possible protection.
