TWO JORDANIAN FIREFIGHTING HELICOPTERS NOW OPERATIONAL

 in-cyprus 13 May 2024

In a bid to strengthen firefighting capabilities amid looming wildfire threats, Cyprus welcomed two firefighting helicopters along with their 18-member crew.

The deployment aims to bolster the island’s firefighting resources ahead of the impending fire season.

Having arrived in Paphos a week ago, the helicopters and crew underwent rigorous preparation and familiarization exercises.

Now fully equipped and briefed on the local terrain, they stand ready to support firefighting operations across Cyprus whenever the need arises.

The Jordanian mission, dispatched to Cyprus, serves to augment the Republic of Cyprus’ aerial firefighting fleet until additional aircraft, to be leased by Cyprus, become available.

Crew training commenced immediately upon their arrival, ensuring swift deployment in the battle against wildfires.

According to Maria Panayiotou, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environment, the cooperation includes provisions for at least one aircraft from each service to be on standby 24/7, with an impressive response time of approximately 30 minutes.

Moreover, Cyprus is actively engaging with neighbouring and other nations to secure further firefighting assets if necessary.

In addition to aerial support, Cyprus has fortified its ground forces, with the Forestry Department’s personnel fully operational since April 1, marking an earlier readiness compared to previous years.

Complementing this effort, the Fire Service, Civil Defense, District Administrations, and the Game and Fauna Service remain on high alert, collectively ensuring a proactive approach to fire prevention and suppression across the island.
