PAPHOS - GOOD FRIDAY PARADE - TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS

The solemn atmosphere of Good Friday will be shared by a large number of faithful in Pafos at the meeting of the Epitaphs of the Cathedral of Agios Theodoros and the Church of Agios Kendeos, at the 28th October Square (Municipal Hall).

According to an announcement by the Municipality of Pafos, continuing a tradition of decades, the Municipality of Pafos organizes this year the ceremony in collaboration with the Holy Metropolis of Pafos, the Tactical Complex of the 8th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard, the Police Directorate of the Pafos E-district and the Stavraeton Corps.

According to the program of the whole ceremony, the two Epitaphs will end at the 28th of October Square around 9.30 p.m. From 8.00 p.m., the Eulogies of the Lamentation Epitaph will be transmitted to the Square, according to the spirit of the day of the culmination of the Divine Drama.

At around 9.40 p.m. and after the meeting of the two Epitaphs, a prayer will be sung from a platform at the 28th October Square officiated by the Metropolitan of Pafos, Mr. Tychikos. Once again, the Pafos Music Club Choir will sing the Lamentation Epitaph under the direction of Mr. Sotiris Karagiorgis, enriching the solemn atmosphere.

The procession of the Epitaph of Agios Theodoros Cathedral is expected to begin around 9.20 p.m. and will follow the following route: Agios Theodorou Street – Kostis Palamas Square – 25th March Street – Dionysios Solomos Square – G. Griva Digeni Avenue – 28th October Square. For the procession, the established procession will be formed with the participation of the Holy Clergy and the dignitaries. It will be preceded by the Pafos Municipality Philharmonic under the direction of Mr. Zacharias Evangelou and will be accompanied by an honorary contingent of the National Guard and members of the Stavraeton Corps.

Traffic arrangements

The Municipality of Pafos and the Pafos District Police Department have made special arrangements for the smooth conduct of the whole event and the avoidance of traffic congestion. Specifically:

(1) From 1.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. on Good Friday, May 3, it will be prohibited to park any vehicles and other wheeled vehicles on 25th March Street (adjacent to the Public Garden) and from 8.30 p.m. on the other roads and points through which the procession will pass.

(2) During the period 8.30 p.m. – 11.00 p.m., Andreas Ioannou, Ioannis Agrotis, 25th March streets, the section of G. Griva – Digeni Avenue from its junction with 25th March Street to Kennedy Square and the section of Evagoras Pallikarides Avenue from Kennedy Square to its junction with Andreas Tselepou and Charalambou Mouskou streets will be closed periodically to traffic.

(3) In order to meet the increased parking needs, the Parking Area next to the old Central Police Station, the Iakoveio Gymnasium (former GSK stadium), part of the stadium next to the G ́ Primary School (entrance from Grigori Afxentiou Street), the parking area of the New Government Buildings, the open space next to the Buildings of the Pafos District Administration will be used, the Parking Area of the Municipal Library, the recently formed area next to the building of the P.E.O. (Nikos Antoniadi Street), the open space behind the apartment building "Sylva Court" (access from Ermou Street and Nikos Antoniadi Street) and the area next to the Genocide Monument of Pontian Hellenism (Evagoras Pallikaridi Avenue). Drivers are requested to faithfully apply the emergency measures and comply with the road signs and the instructions of the Police and the Traffic Service of the Municipality.

On this occasion, the Municipality of Pafos appeals to people, especially young people, not to use firecrackers and other prohibited pyrotechnic articles, endangering the health and fitness of themselves and their fellow human beings.
