MOTORCYCLE MOT - IF NOT DONE, REGISTRATION & INSURANCE REVOKED

 Filenews 14 May 2024

Motorcycles of all types are required to undergo technical inspection in the coming period.

As the officer of the Department of Road Transport, Mr. Joseph Miltiadous, told philenews, the inspections at the 16 Private Technical Inspection Centers for Vehicles (I.K.T.E.O.) that have been licensed for this purpose, begin inspections from today and are estimated to last about a year, given that the owners of a total of 63,000 motorcycles will be periodically invited to present them.

As Mr. Miltiadous explains, the owners of the older 5,000 who are registered will be the first to be invited to present their motorcycles (two-wheeled, three-wheeled and four-wheeled) and the date of their first registration will be taken into account for the order of seniority. A call will follow for the next 5,000 and so on until all machines have passed technical inspection.

Owners will be informed by sending an sms message and therefore, the Department of Road Transport invites them to update their contact details by subscribing to the online services of TOM [Dept Road Transport]. Owners will be given two months to present them for inspection. Taking into account that the process starts today, on July 14, the first 5,000 who have already been invited will be deemed unsuitable if they do not present themselves for technical inspection. The same procedure will be followed with all motorcycles. In case of non-presence of motorcycles, their registration will be revoked and therefore they will not be covered by insurance.

On July 14, the next 5,000 will be called for inspection. Those who neglect to present their motorcycles within two months (based on the applicable margin) can do so at any time thereafter, but until they obtain approval, they will not be entitled to use them.

According to Mr. Miltiadous, among the checks that will be carried out, will be the brakes, steering, sound emitted, lights and generally everything that is checked in cars.

It is noted that from June 1st any motorcycle that completes four years from its first registration, automatically its owner will receive a message to present it for inspection.

The maximum inspection fee was set at €25 although the owner has the option to vary the fee downwards rather than upwards. The re-inspection in case a motorcycle is not approved in the initial inspection was set at €10.
