As part of the actions of the Police during the Easter holidays, the following incidents occurred yesterday and at dawn today:

In the Limassol district, yesterday afternoon, during a search of a house where a 27-year-old man lives, 113 firecrackers were found in boxes, as well as a small amount of cannabis. The 27-year-old was arrested for flagrant offences and then released after being charged in writing.

Moreover, during a check carried out near a church last night, two improvised explosive devices (plastic water bottles containing flammable material and to which firecrackers were attached) were found in an open area.

In Larnaka district, around 5pm yesterday, members of the Police stopped a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man for inspection. In a subsequent search, two boxes containing 40 firecrackers each were found inside the vehicle and confiscated. The 40-year-old was arrested for the offence of illegal possession and transport of explosives and after being charged in writing, he was released to be summoned before a court.

In Famagusta district, around 6.50pm yesterday, members of the Famagusta Police Authority, noticed a vehicle moving suspiciously near a church. After it stopped, two young people got off the vehicle, who tried to set fire to piles of wood, and after noticing the members of the Police, they fled. Examinations revealed testimony against five persons aged between 16 and 18, who were questioned and charged in writing with offences involving negligent and reckless acts and released.

Cyprus Police

The Police arrested a 55-year-old man yesterday afternoon, as part of an investigation into two cases of arson. The suspect was arrested on a judicial arrest warrant and taken into custody to facilitate investigations, in connection with two investigated cases of arson of betting agencies, committed on April 08 and 09, 2024 in Nicosia. The 55-year-old was brought before the Nicosia District Court today, where a four-day detention order was issued against him. The TAE of Nicosia continues the exams.

Police and fire services were on high alert in Limassol on Saturday, after a number of tyres were set on fire on a main road.

Officers believe two minors were implicated who were taken to a police station. Their parents had to be notified due to their age and they will have to give statements in the next few days.

The flames broke out shortly after 4am on Nikou and Despina Pattichi street, on Spyrou Kyprianou. Authorities were set to investigate whether the smoke and flames affected the traffic cameras.

Police and fire services are increasing patrols in light of the traditional bonfire.
