More than 700 checks on trucks and buses on the road network were carried out by the Police, as part of the European campaign of checks on trucks and buses. The checks revealed a large number of complaints about various traffic offences.

The screening campaign was carried out simultaneously across Europe between 13 and 19 May 2024, as part of the actions of the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL.

During the campaign in Cyprus, members of the district Traffic Police Departments and the Traffic Police Headquarters carried out a total of 716 checks of trucks and buses (661 trucks and 55 buses), which were detected moving on the road network all over Cyprus. These checks resulted in a total of 277 complaints for various traffic offences, of which 273 concerned trucks and four buses.

Most of these complaints (112) concerned various offences relating to vehicle tachographs. Another 30 complaints concerned vehicles whose tyres were worn. At the same time, three truck drivers tested positive in a preliminary narcotic test, while four others were charged with speeding.

Police checks on the entire road network continue daily, in order to establish a proper road culture and reduce fatal and serious road collisions.

Filenews

The arrest of a foreigner in Limassol yesterday afternoon was episodic. He was moving suspiciously while in possession of a 19.5cm knife.

During his arrest, he attacked a police officer trying to escape. The arrested man appears to remain as of 2021. According to the Police, around 17:00 yesterday afternoon, a member of the cycling police while on a bicycle patrol on Georgiou Fasoulioti Street, noticed a pedestrian moving suspiciously and stopped him for checking.

During the verification of his data, the person in question presented a Bulgarian identity card, which, however, was forged, since the check found that the person in question did not resemble the photo of the identity card.

Subsequently, in a search, he was found in possession of a 19.5cm knife with a pointed tip. The member of the Police proceeded to arrest the person for offenses of forgery and stabbing.

The suspect pushed the police officer in the chest and tried to flee while resisting arrest. The above person was arrested again for assaulting a police officer.

A further search of his possession found various burglary tools as well as property, which was unable to give satisfactory explanations for its possession.

The person in question was taken to the offices of the ICF Limassol where, under oral questioning, he admitted to committing the offences, giving his real details. According to police, he is a 38-year-old man of Georgian origin.

An inspection carried out through the Aliens and Immigration Service found that the 38-year-old has been staying illegally in Cyprus since October 2021. At first sight the identity he presented appears not to be genuine. The suspect was detained and is expected to appear today before the Limassol District Court for a request for detention.

The 23-year-old man is facing a four-year prison sentence responsible for the fatal car crash that resulted in the death of 77-year-old Eleni Stavrinidou in Kokkinotrimithia last Friday.

The Legal Service, examining the case file, ended up registering a case against the 23-year-old and charging him under Article 210 of the Penal Code, namely "causing death by reckless, reckless or dangerous act". If a person is convicted of the offence in question, the convicted person is liable to imprisonment not exceeding four years.

However, the Police, as we are informed, had recommended to the Legal Service the prosecution of the young man on the basis of Article 205, namely for the felony of homicide, which provides for a sentence of life imprisonment ("Any person who causes the death of another person by an unlawful act or omission shall be guilty of the felony of homicide").

The case was being investigated by the Nicosia Traffic Police and the Nicosia ICF. The two police departments, as revealed on Monday by philenews, had obtained video footage from a camera inside the 23-year-old's car showing strange driving behaviour.

As we wrote on Monday, this recorded footage shows the young man from a long distance swerving, maintaining this unusual course for several meters and finally dragging the unfortunate woman, who was visible.

On the basis of this visual material, which, as philenews learns, was obtained legally, a recommendation was made for prosecution on the basis of the felony of homicide. However, the legal service considered that it was not sufficient to prove before a court the constituent elements of homicide.

Developments regarding the case of attempted murder of Dimitris Andronikos ("Dimitroui") that occurred on April 23 on the Palaichori-Anthoupoli road.

This morning a case was registered and eight persons were indicted. At the same time, the court procedure for referring the case to the Assize Court was launched (5/7, 09:30).

It appears that two of the 10 who were detained for this crime have been released. The suspect, whose home contained a cardboard box believed to contain 9mm bullets, and a 28-year-old man of Romanian origin were not charged in the case. The latter was suspected of stealing the two scooter-type motorcycles, which, according to the ICF of Nicosia, had been used by the perpetrators to carry out an assassination plan.

Reports say the 28-year-old is expected to be charged with other offences, which are not linked to the attempted murder. The prosecution's spokeswoman, Antigone Michael, requested that the defendants be detained as undertrials. As he explained, there is a risk of evasion of justice and influence of the case.

Due to the fact that shortly before 12:00 noon voluminous witness material was delivered to the defense lawyers (lawyers Victor Akamas, Agathoklis Korelis, Andreas Tsentidis, Nikos Koromias and Chloe Constantinou appear on behalf of the defendants), it was decided to suspend the proceedings for a period of one hour.
