MINISTER OF INTERIOR - 'IN RECENT DAYS, WE HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY ROTTEN BOATS' - ASKING FOR PRACTICAL SUPPORT FROM THE EU

 Filenews 3 April 2024

The need for practical support to the Republic of Cyprus by the European Union to address the increased migratory flows, stressed the Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou.

Speaking to Triton, he said that the government has taken many measures to make Cyprus an unattractive destination, achieving an 85% reduction in migrant flows from African countries.

He indicated, however, that this cannot be the case with Lebanese Syrians because they are considered refugees granted temporary protection status.

Mr. Ioannou pointed out that the situation is constantly deteriorating and expressed the assessment that this situation will continue.

"In recent days we have been basically attacked with rotten boats," the interior minister said.

He warned that the Republic of Cyprus will no longer be able to respond if increased migration flows continue.

Ioannou also said that Lebanon should receive greater financial support from the European Union.

He indicated that Nicosia demands a reassessment of the Syrian regime and the linking of the aid received by Lebanon with its ability to intercept boats bound for Cyprus.

"Cyprus does not want money, what it is demanding is that solidarity be shown in practice by the other member states of the European Union," the interior minister noted.
