EUROSTAT - CYPRUS IS SECOND IN TERMS OF INHABITANTS BORN IN ANOTHER EU MEMBER STATE

The third largest share among EU Member States of residents born in another country (22.7%), and second in particular in terms of proportion of residents born in another EU Member State (10.6%), was Cyprus in 2023, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

The highest proportion among EU resident Member States born abroad (in another Member State or in third countries) was recorded in Luxembourg (50.4%). Malta (28.3%) and Cyprus (22.7%) followed lower.

The lowest shares were recorded in Poland (2.5%), Bulgaria (2.6%) and Romania (2.8%).

In absolute terms, the highest number of foreign-born residents (EU and non-EU countries) was recorded in 2023 in Germany (16.5 million people), France (8.9 million) and Spain (8.2 million).

Luxembourg also had the highest proportion of inhabitants born in another EU country (33.2%). It was followed by Cyprus (10.6%) and Austria (9.5%).

The lowest proportions of inhabitants born in other EU countries, below 1%, were recorded in Poland (0.6%), Lithuania (0.7%) and Bulgaria (0.9%).

In terms of proportion of inhabitants born in third countries, the highest shares were recorded in Malta (20.9%) and Luxembourg (17.2%), followed by Ireland, Sweden and Estonia with a share of 15.2% each. Cyprus was lower, at 12.1%.

The lowest shares of non-EU-born inhabitants were recorded in Slovakia (1%), Bulgaria and Romania (1.7%).

According to data released by Eurostat on migration to the EU from third countries, a total of 5.1 million people migrated to the EU from outside the EU in 2022. Similarly, 1.0 million migrated from the EU to third countries.

The influx of migrants from third countries into the EU more than doubled in 2022 compared to around 2.4 million recorded in 2021.At the same time, the number of EU residents migrating to non-EU countries remained stable as well as in 2021 this number stood at 1.0 million.

By population ratio, it is estimated that 11 non-EU migrants accounted for 1000 permanent residents in the EU in 2022.

In relation to the size of the permanent population, the highest rate of migration from third countries was recorded in 2022 in Malta (66 per 1000), Luxembourg (48 per 1000) and Estonia (37 per 1000).

The lowest ratios were recorded in the same year in Slovakia (1 per 1000 people), and Bulgaria and France (6 per 1000).
