A supplementary report of the Special Ecological Assessment (EEOA) of June 2021, for the evaluation of the construction works of Phase A of the road network of the Akamas National Forest Park and the implementation of conditions for reducing potential impacts, was sent to the members of the Ad-Hoc Committee for the road works in Akamas.

The most important conclusions of the report refer to the removal of the entire length of the water supply hose and cable in an environmentally acceptable manner and to be transferred out of the Akamas NFP. Next, to restore any potential impact on the environment, as well as to find alternative water supply solutions for firefighting needs.

The report refers to the removal of all retaining walls and the degradation/improvement of the length of the road up to the White River. All walls in the area of sandstone formations in Toxeftra to be demolished. Furthermore, it is emphasized not to construct new walls on the rest of the roads except in cases where, following the appropriate documentation by the designer, it is deemed by the employer to be necessary for reasons of protection of moving vehicles and visitors.

The report notes, inter alia, that the issue of rainwater inflow coming from the residential developments of the Municipality of Pegeia and the creation of the road leading to the entrance of the SAR in Aspros Potamos must be resolved immediately. Furthermore, it is noted that the damage and erosions created at the beginning of the project due to rainwater inflow must be repaired.

The report notes to examine the abolition of all retaining walls on the section of the road Toxeftra – Avakas, as well as to implement the relevant decision of the Council of Ministers where most of the road of Lipati is removed from the current construction contract to review the proposed solution and address the serious geotechnical problems that have arisen.

The hydraulic works with particular emphasis on those in the area of Avakas should be examined by the Water Development Department for changes regarding their functionality in relation to the handling of eels.
