An alarm was raised on Wednesday at the Port and Maritime Police when radars detected two boats with irregular migrants off the coast of Cyprus.
The first boat was spotted at 8:15 a.m. with 16 men on board. Police arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly piloting the boat.
The second boat was spotted at 15:20 and was carrying 20 irregular migrants.
A total of 36 irregular migrants were safely transferred to the Golden Coast fishing shelter in Paralimni, where their details were recorded.
The irregular migrants were then transferred to the Pournara Temporary Accommodation Centre for Migrants in Kokkinotrimithia.
Police investigations are ongoing. On Thursday, the arrested man is expected to be brought before the Famagusta District Court for a detention order.
