Alphakat Holdings International Ltd intends to build a plastics pyrolysis plant in Kosi, Larnaca district, aiming at the production of fuel oil.
As stated in the environmental impact study submitted to the competent authority, the plant will consist of 5 identical pyrolysis plants, with a maximum daily combustion capacity of 50 tn of plastic, excluding PVC category, and production of 25 tn of pyrolysis oil. The pyrolysis plants and accompanying equipment will be supplied by BESTON GROUP CO LTD. Pyrolysis is an alternative and environmentally acceptable waste management method. Therefore, the proposed project will contribute to the sustainable and rational management of plastic waste.
The purpose of the proposed project lies in the rational and sustainable management of the country's plastic waste. In addition, the pyrolysis product will strengthen the Cypriot economy by reducing the need to import fuel from abroad.
This is how the factory will work
The plant will operate 24 hours a day 330 days a year. Each plant will have one reactor with a maximum daily capacity of 10 tn of plastic (total 50 tn of plastic) and a capacity of producing 5 tn of pyrolysis oil (total of 25 tn of oil).
Regarding the operation of the pyrolysis system, initially the reactor will be supplied with the plastic raw material through a hydraulic feeder. Diesel fuel will be used to start the 5 rotating reactors and recover the required temperature of 350oC. This process will take about 7 to 8 hours and will take place in conditions of lack of oxygen. The combustion of plastics will produce oil in liquid and gaseous form. The oil produced will be led to catalytic reactors, in order to clean and remove the paraffin oil. It will then pass through the condensation system and the final pyrolysis product will be collected and stored in storage tanks.
A total of six steel tanks, of 50 m3, will be used to store the diesel oil and the final plastic pyrolysis product. Regarding the layout of the proposed project, the total area of the facilities will be equal to 3,500 sq.m.
The pyrolysis plants and accompanying equipment will be placed inside an industrial-type metal structure. The semi-outdoor area under the installation area of the units will be used to store the "big bags" with black carbon, various chemicals, as well as components and equipment. Prefabricated metal building will be installed for the installation of offices, toilet, changing rooms and kitchen. This building will communicate with the pyrolysis plant site through a corridor. The factory will have 20 parking spaces and 2 spaces for disabled people.
The pyrolysis plant will carry lightning protection and be equipped with a fire extinguishing and drainage system.
On a leased state plot
The proposed project will be installed on a state plot leased for a period of 99 years, in Kosi. The part of the development plot on which the proposed project will be installed, occupies an area of 29,000 sq.m. and is part of an Industrial Zone (B2) (in its entirety).
