HOW MUCH DOES A MEAL OR COFFEE COST IN CYPRUS AND THE REST OF EUROPE?

Luxury tends to become going out for food, especially if it is a family, while the price increases that exist for coffee and generally fast food and take away food services do not go back. The accuracy in the exit did not start now but every year it becomes more pronounced as it was preceded by consecutive increases in 2023, 2022 and 2021.

The figures released by the Statistical Office last week reveal how expensive prices have become if you want to go out of your home. Prices at fast food and take away food services were up 5.7% in January year-on-year compared to an increase of 11.5% in 2023 and 5.4% in 2022, prices at canteens appreciated 4% in January from 7.9% in 2023 compared to 2022. Price increases in restaurants, cafes and cafes were 5.6% in January year-on-year, while in January 2023 the increase was 8.6%.

Going out is not only eating or drinking but also various other activities. Prices for recreational and sports services rose 3.2% in January year-on-year compared to a 9.6% rise in January 2023. However, in the age of high prices, there are not only increases, but also decreases in prices, such as in cinema, theatre, concerts, with the index recording a marginal decline of 0.1% in January compared to a rise of 2.5% in January 2023.

Comparisons with other countries

But beyond the data of the Statistical Service there are also comparisons with other countries based on the international platform Numbeo on how much it costs to go out for food. The numbers show that if a middle-income family of four decides to go out to eat, they will have to do their calculations well. In Cyprus, according to the international platform, the data given are lunch in a cheap restaurant €15 and lunch for two people in a medium class restaurant (three courses) €60. The average price of cappuccino coffee (regular) is €3.27.

In Greece, the meal in a cheap restaurant is, according to the platform's data, €15, a two-person meal in a mid-range restaurant €50, cappuccino (regular) €3.32. In France a meal in a cheap restaurant costs €15, a meal for two people in a mid-range restaurant €60, cappuccino (regular) €2.97. In Belgium lunch in a cheap restaurant is estimated €18, lunch for two people in a medium restaurant €80, cappuccino (regular) €3.25. In Germany, a meal in a cheap restaurant is estimated at €12, a two-person meal in a mid-range restaurant €60, cappuccino (regular) €3.26.

In Italy a meal in a cheap restaurant is estimated €15, a meal for two people in a medium class restaurant €60, cappuccino (regular €1.58), in Latvia a meal in a cheap restaurant is estimated €10, a two-person meal in a medium class restaurant €55, cappuccino (regular) €2.88, in Lithuania a meal in a cheap restaurant is estimated €10, a meal for two people in a medium class restaurant €53, cappuccino (regular) €2.96, in Portugal lunch in a cheap restaurant is estimated €10, two-person meal in a mid-range restaurant €40, cappuccino (regular) €1.71, in Spain lunch in a cheap restaurant is estimated €12, lunch for two people in a mid-range restaurant €45, cappuccino (regular) €1.79.
