CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 17 February 2024

A well-established drug import ring in Cyprus appears to have been dismantled by YKAN Limassol, arresting a 22-year-old courier company employee and a 26-year-old man who was allegedly the recipient.

The tests so far show that huge quantities of drugs were imported into Cyprus in the same way in the last month and a half. Quantities that may exceed 80 kilos after the two suspects received, as philenews learns, two packets of drugs every week. The same information states that the packages were declared as clothes and with recipient details, female names.

The role of the 22-year-old courier company employee seems to have been decisive. Specifically, he tracked down the packages of drugs and undertook to deliver them immediately to the 26-year-old. As we are aware, under oral questioning, the 22-year-old claimed to receive €50 for each package he delivered directly to the second suspect. He said he delivered several packages to the person in question in the last month and a half.

The two suspects were brought before the Limassol District Court on Saturday morning, which ordered their detention for a period of eight days. Questioned in writing, the 22-year-old claimed the drugs did not belong to him, while the 26-year-old refused to answer investigators' questions.

The case is expected to be examined through Interpol to identify the sender of the drugs and the persons who may have been supplied by the suspects with drugs. A CCTV inspection of the movements of the two suspects is also expected. The information of philenews reports that the deliveries of drugs were made in the area of Polemidia.

The detection of narcotic substances and the arrest of the above persons were preceded by the detection of a package by the Hellenic Police, destined for Cyprus. The members of YKAN went to Greece where they received the parcel with the 4 kilos of cannabis and then, after they were replaced with dummies, an operation was set up to locate those involved.

The parcel arrived at a courier company in Limassol and the 22-year-old employee informed that he would take the parcel saying that he would deliver it himself to the address indicated. According to the same information, the parcel with the dummy drugs was delivered to the 22-year-old by a police officer under cover and before he could get into his vehicle, he was intercepted and arrested.

Subsequently, he collaborated with the members of YKAN Limassol where a controlled delivery was made to the 26-year-old. It should be noted that from examinations in the company's warehouse, another parcel weighing about 5 kg was found which the employee would deliver to the second suspect.

The two packages contained, in one, a quantity of cannabis weighing approximately 4 kilograms and 311 grams and the second a quantity of cannabis weighing approximately 4 kilograms and 720 grams.
