AKAMAS IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

 Pafos Live 13 February 2024

The examination of the Akamas case begins in the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament. According to an announcement by the Green Movement, the issue of Akamas, which is threatened by catastrophic road works, poor planning, callousness and sloppiness, was raised by the Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation in the European Parliament.

Through the Green Group, the Secretary of International Relations of the Movement, Mrs. Alexia Sakadaki, asked for the issue of Akamas to be raised. The Group's request was accepted and next Wednesday, February 14, from 10:00 to 13:30, the public hearing on this issue opens.

In a relevant statement, Sakadaki states that: "The public debate concerning Akamas will take place in Parliament's Committee on Petitions, on the occasion of the developments brought about by the catastrophic works on the peninsula. For our part, we have provided extensive information on the events and explained to the Green Group and the competent committee what – confused or not – has come to light from time to time.

This is an important and decisive development for the issue of Akamas at European level. We expect to have a positive outcome that will hold the Republic of Cyprus accountable for the enormous ecological disaster on our island."

Ecologists argue that while the issue of the catastrophic works in Akamas is publicly discussed in the EU, in Cyprus there is an attempt to cover it up. "The outcome of the administrative investigation, for almost a whole month, has been in the hands of the Minister of Agriculture who is still studying it. This is despite President Christodoulides' statements for a swift investigation of the administrative (and possibly criminal) aspects of the case of the catastrophic works in Akamas."
