AFTER YEARS OF COMPLAINTS, TASSOS PAPADOPOULOS STREET IN PAPHOS TO ACQUIRE OVERPASS

Filenews 19 February 2024 - by Dora Christodoulou

One step from the beginning of the implementation procedures of the overpass project on Tassos Papadopoulos Avenue in Paphos, in order to avoid future tragedies such as the last one with the tragic loss of the 10-year-old girl who was swept away by a car while crossing the avenue from a controlled crossing point, things are now there.

This is emphasized by the MP for Pafos of the Democratic Party, Chrysanthos Savvides, who pointed out that the messages he has from the competent state departments point in the direction of promoting the procedures for the project.

On Tassos Papadopoulos Avenue, which is adjacent to three schools, Pefkios Georgiadis Elementary, Apostolos Pavlou High School and Agios Neophytos High School, there is no safe pedestrian crossing, he stresses. This particular avenue, as is logical, is penetrated daily by hundreds of students, either when they arrive at school or when they leave. The lack of proper infrastructure led two years ago to the loss of an innocent child who attended primary school.

The stagnation observed for several years on the issue resulted in the loss of the innocent girl's life two years ago at this crossing, says Mr. Savvidis. In addition, the creation of an overpass on this avenue has already been approved by the Traffic Studies Branch, but it still remains in the drawers. Therefore, everything supports the acceleration of the procedures for the execution of the project.

Chrysanthos Savvides expresses the certainty that the interest of those responsible on issues related to road safety and especially on issues of student safety, will contribute to avoiding further delay, now that everything is on track for implementation, as he points out.
