CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 13 January 2024

New incidents caused yesterday in the shelter for migrant minors about 40 people hosted in the facility. According to the police, the young foreigners first gathered in the courtyard of the camp demanding the immediate payment of their allowances.

When it was explained to them that the benefits would be paid next week, they became furious and started throwing chairs, stones and other objects.

Reinforcements were called to the area by the police, and eventually the young foreigners returned to their rooms. There were no injuries but the structure was damaged again.

The 60-year-old defendant from Bulgaria was initially accused of sexually abusing two underage girls, namely his 9-year-old granddaughter and 6-year-old neighbour and daughter of a family member. Yesterday, the Limassol Permanent Assize Court, in closed proceedings, sentenced the 60-year-old defendant to three years in prison on charges of sexual abuse of the 6-year-old. In relation to the charges concerning his 9-year-old granddaughter, as "F" is informed, these were suspended as there was insufficient testimony.

As "F" previously wrote, the 60-year-old defendant initially faced eight charges of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 13. Offences which, according to the minors' testimonies to the police authorities, were committed between March and September 2022 in Limassol. At the time, the 60-year-old from Bulgaria had pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing his 9-year-old granddaughter and 6-year-old and the Assize Court set the case for hearing.

Eventually, the 60-year-old changed his stance and after being acquitted of charges against his 9-year-old granddaughter, he admitted to committing two counts of sexually abusing the 6-year-old.

The defendant's actions are abhorrent and horrifying. Taking advantage of the innocence and trust the 6-year-old had in him, he followed her to her room and while they were playing with each other, as usual, he touched her over the clothes, on the disputed parts of her body. He even encouraged the 6-year-old girl to commit the same heinous and vile acts. It should be noted that the accused often visited the victim's residence as he was her neighbour and maintained friendly relations with her parents.

The defendant was represented by lawyers, Maria Nicolaou and Nayia Panayiotou.
