CHECKS FOR DRINK-DRIVING ARE INTENSIFIED

 Filenews 11 December 2023

Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions.

Alcohol helps reduce mental and psychological effort while driving, but also reduces driver performance, increasing the risk of being involved in a road collision.

According to statistics, a significant proportion of all road deaths caused on EU roads are proven to be due to driving under the influence of alcohol. Statistics show that careless driving/driver distraction and driving under the influence of alcohol have been the main causes of fatal road collisions over the last three years (2020-2022) with a rate of 15.7% and 13.4% respectively.

In order to protect the public and prevent and reduce road collisions on the roads, the Police announce the intensification of checks to identify drivers under the influence of alcohol. Specifically, from tomorrow, Monday, December 11 until Sunday, December 17, 2023, checks will be carried out 24 hours a day, throughout the road network.

At the same time, increased checks to identify drivers driving under the influence of alcohol will be carried out in other European countries, as part of a pan-European action, under the auspices of the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL, of which the Cyprus Police is an active member.

Along with checks for driving under the influence of alcohol, police checks continue for the remaining traffic offences. As always, particular emphasis is placed on those offences that are the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seat belt and safety helmet.
