An alarm was raised at the Port and Maritime Police on Saturday afternoon when a boat carrying irregular migrants was detected by radar.
Three boats of the Port and Maritime Police rushed to the spot where the wooden boat was stopped 7 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco.
The boat was overloaded and 54 irregular migrants from Syria were found to be on board. On board were 38 men, three women and 13 children, seven of whom are unaccompanied.
The irregular migrants boarded the boats of the Port and Maritime Police and were safely transferred to the Golden Coast fishing shelter in Paralimni where their details were recorded. The police arrested a migrant to facilitate interrogations, while the remaining 53 irregular migrants were transferred to the Pournara Temporary Accommodation Centre in Kokkinotrimithia.
