The trial of the serious incidents in Chloraka last August with eight people accused was postponed to December 19, while for other defendants the trial was postponed to March 6, 2024 to answer the charges.

The eight were arraigned yesterday before the Paphos District Court, which adjourned the case to December 19 after the defendants sought legal aid.

The first sentences for last August's Chloraka incidents were recently imposed by the Pafos District Court. In the trial of the first 17 accused of participating in incidents of those days, sentences were imposed on two Greek Cypriots.

The court specifically imposed a fine of 600 euros on a 19-year-old, and a 23-year-old six months in prison suspended for three years and a fine of 600 euros. Both admitted their involvement in the incidents before the bench.

The curtain came down today on the case of the staged robbery that occurred at noon on March 27, 2023 on the Nicosia – Limassol bypass, at the height of Parekklisia, with a loot of  €30,000, which to date have not been located.

It is recalled that the complaint to the police was made by the 54-year-old defendant and former hotel employee, who said that he was robbed. As he falsely reported, the perpetrator took his bag with the €30,000, which were receipts from the hotel.

The Permanent Assize Court of Limassol, with its unanimous decision, today imposed on the 54-year-old defendant a sentence of 2 years imprisonment on the charge of theft by an employee and shorter sentences of 3 and 2 months on the other two charges. The Assize Court considered the question of suspending the 54-year-old's sentence, which it rejected. The 54-year-old was found guilty after admitting his own guilty plea to the three charges he faced, including theft from an employee, theft and malicious damage.

According to the Assize Court's decision, it appears that the 54-year-old's role was essential in committing the offences, noting that he was the one who carried out the whole plan of the staged robbery. It was taken into account that he is a person with no criminal record, as well as his family and personal circumstances.

On the other hand, the 53-year-old co-defendant and neighbour of the 54-year-old, was acquitted of the charges he faced in connection with the case, while he was found guilty by pleading guilty to the charge of illegal possession of explosives after eight parachute flares were found and confiscated at his home after his arrest.

The Assize Court, in its decision, said that the 53-year-old is a person with previous convictions, while he was given a suspended 4-month prison sentence in 2021 for a similar offense involving possession of explosives. The Court imposed a sentence of 4 months imprisonment and activated the suspended sentence of 4 months.
