David Hunter is being taken back to court after the Attorney General appealed against both the verdict and the sentence.
It is recalled that a two-year prison sentence was imposed by the permanent assize court on seventy-six-year-old British man, David Hunter, who was found guilty of the murder of his wife Janice in December 2021. The accused had been in custody since 2021 and was released after serving his sentence.
At the hearing the legal department was given two months to prepare its legal arguments, while Hunter's defense team was told it would then have two months to respond. A date will then be set to decide the verdict, which is expected to be in April or May next year.
Hunter's attorney, Michael Polak of Justice Abroad, said he would fight to overturn the attorney general's decision, which risks his client being returned to prison.
He added: "If they make a decision based on what the Attorney General says, and if he is convicted of murder and not manslaughter, then he will end up in prison for the rest of his life. It is obviously very important for him, but we hope that everything will go well and we will do everything so that he does not return to prison. I was shocked when the Attorney General decided to appeal. We are not sure why this decision was made, given the circumstances of the case."
A friend of Hunter's revealed to ITV that David is in Tremithousa, the village where his wife died. He lives just five minutes from his wife's grave and visits it every day. "He decided that this is his life and if the Cypriot authorities decide that his life must be something else, he will accept it."
