PROGRAMME LAUNCHED TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT WASTE HIERARCHY, PREVENTION, REUSE AND RECYCLING

Filenews 13 October 2023 - by Angelos Nicolaou

The program launched today by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment at Eleftherias Square aims to create a new culture by informing and raising public awareness about the waste hierarchy, prevention, reuse and recycling.

This is the beginning of the implementation of the project "Management of hazardous waste from households" by the Department of Environment, which aims at the separate collection and diversion of hazardous waste from households to licensed hazardous waste management facilities for appropriate treatment.

The program will be implemented by four towed mobile units that will be distributed in all municipalities and communities of Cyprus on the basis of a program, collecting household hazardous waste, always in cooperation with the local authorities.

During the visits, the public will be able to leave their hazardous waste in the mobile unit in the various bins that have been configured internally. Specifically, the units will collect waste such as batteries, small electrical and electronic devices, pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, medicines, cleaning products, printer inks and toners, lacquers, paints, solvents, varnishes, lubricants. The plant will remain in the same place for 2-3 days, and then move to another location. Household hazardous waste is collected and transported to licensed collective system units.

[Pending release of the programme, most waste can be disposed of FREE OF CHARGE, at the Green Centre at Chlorakas - see below]
